Mars500 is a simulated mission to Mars conducted by the Russian Academy of Sciences with the participation of ESA. Volunteers will be confined in a mock-up spaceship and go through the phases of a mission to the red planet. It will start in 2008.

Location: Institute of Biomedical Problems (Russia)
Size: 200m²
5 modules:
living quarters (individual cabins), exercise room, storage area, bio-medical unit/laboratory, one module recreating the Martian surface
"Passengers": 6 persons (2 Europeans, 4 Russians)

Phases of the Project

Phases I and II: 105 days each (mid-2008)
Phase III: 520 days (end 2008/beginning 2009).

Simulation stages


Flight Earth-Mars: 250 days
Stay on Mars: 30 days (3 crew members) + 30 days before landing
Flight Mars-Earth: 240 Days
